Acrylic, Artisan Water-Soluble Oils, Chalk Pastel, and Lino Print on Canvas
I Sea Cobh – Cobh by the Sea is a vibrant, multi layered tribute to one of Ireland’s most iconic maritime landscapes. The work captures the famous “Deck of Cards” houses and the towering presence of St. Colman’s Cathedral overlooking Cork Harbour.
The piece is a technical journey: it begins with a bold acrylic base, building into a rich texture of water soluble oils. The sky is rendered in soft, atmospheric chalk pastels, creating a swirling, ethereal backdrop that contrasts with the architectural precision of the town. In a unique stylistic choice, the Cathedral is not just painted, but Lino printed directly onto the canvas. This layered technique creates a distinct visual pop, emphasising the historical weight of the structure against the fluid motion of the sea and sky.

Artist Statement:
“This landscape is born from a deep, personal connection to the water. It is inspired by the countless times I’ve sailed past the colourful tiers of Cobh and the perspective gained from many walks along Haulbowline Island.
My goal was to capture the ‘shifting’ nature of this view. By Lino printing St. Colman’s Cathedral over a painted base, I wanted to create a slight visual vibration, an illusion of movement that mimics the experience of sailing or walking past. It’s a reflection of how this historical landmark remains a fixed point of beauty in a constantly moving maritime world.” -Onóir O Brien 2026
