Artist Statement:

Growing up in Ireland during the 1980s and 90s, I witnessed a pivotal shift in women’s rights. Mary Robinson emerged as a beacon of hope and change during this era of transformation. “Peace Talking Hands” is a tribute to her extraordinary ability to connect with nations through her expressive gestures, each hand movement a testament to her dedication to justice and human rights.

Her elegance and strength in confronting political injustices and religious oppression deeply resonate with me. Robinson embodied the voice of a generation of women who had been silenced, articulating their struggles with grace and conviction.

Through mixed media, I sought to illustrate not just her voice, but the hands that spoke volumes. This piece reflects my profound admiration for her legacy, a reminder that the pursuit of equality is ongoing and that communication, both spoken and unspoken, can bridge divides.

I invite viewers to reflect on the power of dialogue and the strength found in unity. Just as her hands reached across divides, may this artwork inspire conversations that foster understanding and peace.
